You run one guided command from the terminal, and each of its steps is also a standalone command when you would rather script it. After setup, a background daemon watches the folder you chose and keeps it in sync in both directions, using filesystem events with periodic scans to catch anything they miss.

Setup asks about your SSH host and folders, creates this device's key, and guides you through verifying and authorizing the connection. The private key never leaves the device or reaches our servers.

Run setup on each Mac or Linux device that should share the folder. Each device gets its own key and connects directly to your storage, never through byosynch servers.

Setup runs the first sync and enables start-on-boot. The daemon then moves changes in both directions and preserves conflicting versions instead of choosing which one wins. Check its work at any time.

A byosynch account is required to complete setup and start syncing.

Your devices connect directly to your SSH storage. File names and contents stay out of our infrastructure. SSH encrypts the connection; files remain readable by your storage provider. byosynch does not provide end-to-end encryption.

File names and contents travel between your device and your server over SSH. They do not pass through our infrastructure at any stage of a sync.
