Wide error bars, deliberately. The referral half is arithmetic you can check; the authority half is an order-of-magnitude stand-in, because nobody outside a search engine can price ranking benefit. Use it to compare two opportunities, not to invoice anyone.
About this tool
Most backlink calculators key on Domain Rating alone, because it is the number that is easy to look up. That produces confident figures with nothing behind them. This splits the estimate in two: the referral half is arithmetic you can check, and the authority half is an order-of-magnitude stand-in that is labelled as one.
- Use the traffic of the linking page, not the site. A link from a page nobody visits on a high-authority domain sends you nobody.
- One to three per cent click-through is typical for an in-content link. A link in a footer or a sidebar is an order of magnitude lower.
- The authority estimate scales non-linearly with Domain Rating, because the gap between DR 70 and DR 80 is far wider than between DR 20 and DR 30.
- Use this to compare two opportunities, not to price an invoice. Nobody outside a search engine can price ranking benefit, and any tool implying otherwise is guessing with more decimal places.
Questions
- How much is a backlink worth?
- It depends almost entirely on the traffic of the specific page linking to you and how relevant it is. A relevant link from a page with real readers beats a high-DR link from a page nobody sees.
- Does Domain Rating matter?
- Somewhat, and less than it is credited with. It is a third-party estimate of a site’s link profile, not a Google metric, and it says nothing about whether the specific page sends traffic.
- Should I buy backlinks?
- No. Paid links violate Google’s guidelines and carry manual-action risk. Earning links from directories, write-ups and tools people actually use is slower and does not get penalised.
